Proposal to Add Football Classification Passes First Hurdle

South Dakota is one step away from adding a seventh classification for the 2013 season.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association board voted 6-2 Wednesday in favor of adding a Class 11AAA for the 2013-14 school year.

The proposal would split the state's current largest classification (11AA) in half, with the largest eight teams moving into 11AAA and the remaining eight staying in 11AA.

The new classification will be added, if the SDHSAA passes the proposal again during its second reading at a February 29th meeting.

We may know tomorrow if the South Dakota High School Activities Association will add an additional classification in football.

The SDHSAA board of directors will be meeting to discuss a proposal that would create a Class 11AAA for the 2013-14 school year by splitting the 16 teams in Class 11AA in two. The new class would be made-up of the eight largest schools, while the remaining eight schools would be in Class 11AA.

Roosevelt Ends Washington Reign as 11AA Champs

Roosevelt got revenge and a title at the same time on Saturday.

The Rough Riders beat Washington, the two-time defending state champs, 31-17 to win its first Class 11AA state title since 2007. In the process, Roosevelt avenged its only loss this season, a 34-29 set-back at the hands of Washington (9-3) in the final week of the regular season.

Roosevelt was led by quarterback Scott Tyler who passed for three touchdowns and ran for another. Tyler was 17-of-28 for 337 yards.

Washington was looking for its 38th overall state title. No other team in America has won that many state championships.

Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan Wins Back-to-Back 9AA Titles

Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan won its second straight Class 9AA football championship with a 36-24 victory over Kimball/White Lake on Friday.

The Seahawks raced-out to a 30-0 lead before Kimball/White Lake was able to close the gap to 30-16 at the start of the second half.

BEE sophomore quarterback Jace Conner was given the game's Joe Robbie MVP Award after throwing for 127 yards and a touchdown, plus rushing for 62 yards and a score.

Canistota Cruises to Another State Football Title

Canistota matched last year's Class 9B championship game point total in Friday's 9A title game.

The Hawks beat Wall 66-6 behind quarterback Cody Bunger, who was named the winner of the Joe Robbie Most Valuable Player award. Bunger ran for two touchdowns and passed for three more to help Canistota cap its second straight undefeated season.

In 2010, the Hawks beat Hitchcock-Tulare 66-0 in the 9B championship game.

Waverly-South Shore Wins 9B Crown

Waverly-South Shore beat Avon 58-24 Friday to capture the Class 9B state championship.

WSS won its first-ever state title behind quarterback Taylor Zemlicka, who amassed 376 yards in total offense. Zemlicka ran for 196 yards and three scores, plus passed for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

Taylor's twin brother Tyson caught three of his brother's passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Taylor and Tyson's cousin Brent Zemlicka ran for 145 yards and scored two touchdowns.

South Dakota's Class 11B championship game came down to the final 1:32 on Thursday.

Brett Page's 5-yard TD pass Andrew Buchmann with 1:32 to play game Tri-Valley an 18-14 win over McCook Central-Montrose. Tri-Valley took a 12-0 lead before MCM (10-2) bounced back to take a two point lead.

The Mustangs have now won three state titles in five years.

Dell Rapids Wins Another Class 11A Title

Dell Rapids captured its second straight Class 11A championship Thursday with a 35-0 win over West Central.

The Quarriers (11-1) used a strong ground game for its third title in four years. Channing Barber led the way with 227 yards on the ground and four touchdowns.

Next year there will be only 12 playoff teams in Class 11AA, instead of the usual 16.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association has voted unanimously to reduce the field by four and award first-round byes to the top four seeds, who will advance directly to the quarterfinal round.

Washington Improves Its Position as High School Football's Titletown

After back-to-back South Dakota state titles in 2009 and 2010, Washington has widen its lead on the all-time list of high school football championships in America.

The Warriors, who won their first title in 1905, now own 37 state titles, which is five more than runner-up Little Rock Central in Arkansas.

Two other schools on the all-time list added to their trophy case in 2010. Artesia (New Mexico) captured its 27th title to move into a tie for third-place with Lawrence (Kansas) and Omaha Creighton Prep (Nebraska). Everett (Massachusetts) won its 26th title, although Massachusetts doesn't crown an overall state champ.

Canistota's first-ever state title last month has resulted in the team being honored as the 2010 boys' team of the year by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association.

The Hawks finished a perfect 12-0 this season outscoring their opponents 627-38 on their way to the Class 9B state title.

Meanwhile, Sioux Falls Washington four-year starter Matt Hermanson is the Prep Boys' Athlete of the Year. The Warriors, who have won 26 straight games, have been to four straight Class 11AA championship games, winning the last two.

Hermanson, who will play his college football at Montana, has been a four-year starter at safety and has been the team's starting quarterback during the last two.

Last year Hermanson threw for over 1,300 yards and 22 touchdowns, while rushing for over 560 yards.

Over the next several months South Dakota high school athletic officials will debate whether to add another football classification.

A proposal has been put forth to the South Dakota High School Activities Association that would split the Class 11AA into two classifications...creating a new Class 11AAA.

The Rapid City Journal reports that proposal is the direct result of certain schools not being happy with a disparity in enrollments within the current classification system.

Dell Rapids Wins South Dakota 11A Football Title

Dell Rapids is the South Dakota Class 11A high school football champ.

The Quarriers beat Harrisburg 55-20 on Friday to win the championship. It was the second time the Quarriers beat Harrisburg this season...the first game was closer with Dell Rapids winning 25-13.

ArgusLeader.com reports that Dell Rapids used a strong ground game that amassed over 350 yards to win the title.

Landreau Wins South Dakota 11B Title in Last Seconds

There was plenty of offense for the fans in South Dakota's Class 9AA championship game on Thursday, and when the dust cleared, Bridgewater/Emery-Ethan was holding the state championship trophy after a 48-34 victory over Viborg-Hurley.

With the first day of practice beginning August 16th, I wanted to take the time to thank all of my readers, who have made this blog successful over the past three years. I have bigger-and-better things planned this year with more original content.

South Dakota High School Playoffs Open With Big Upset

It didn't take long for the first upset in the South Dakota high school football playoffs. Tuesday night, Sisseton knocked-off top-ranked West Central 48-47. Sisseton quarterback Ryan Toelle passed for a Class 11A playoff record 595 yards in the win, including three touchdowns.

West Central, which finished the regular season unbeaten, entered the post-season having won 10 of the last 13 state championships.

Speaking of records, The Argus Leader reports that Brandon Valley's Austin Sumner set a new state record for touchdown passes in a career. Sumner threw four in Tuesday night's 34-13 Class 11AA win over Mitchell. Sumner now has 83 career touchdown passes to surpass the former record of 79 held by Nathan Jacob of St. Thomas More.

Lincoln Wins First South Dakota's Class 11AA Crown

Lincoln claimed its first-ever South Dakota high school football championship Saturday night. The Patriots (11-2) beat Washington, which finishes runner-up for the second straight year, 27-20 for the state's Class 11AA championship. Dell Rapids Wins South Dakota 11A Crown

Dell Rapids wore the moniker "Road Warriors" throughout the South Dakota 11A high school football playoffs. Friday, the Quarriers won their first state football title beating Winner 34-6. It was Dell Rapids third consecutive postseason road victory. Along the way, the Quarriers outscored its playoff opponents 123-50, including a 70-30 win in the opening round. Tri-Valley Defends South Dakota 11B Title

Tri-Valley became only the fourth South Dakota school to defend its Class 11B football title Friday. The Mustangs dominated from start to finish in beating Groton Area 41-3 to cap an 11-1 season. Running back Nate Kirby was named the game's MVP.

Avon Gives Head Coach Homecoming Gift...South Dakota 9A

Avon head coach George Culver won his 100th game Thursday, which gave the Pirates the school's fourth South Dakota high school football championship since 2002. Avon beat Gettysburg 37-8 in the 9A championship at the Dakota Dome behind running back Earv Archambeau, who rushed for 213-yards on just 15-carries. It was a very emotional win for Culver, who just returned one month ago to the United States after being deployed overseas with the National Guard.

Hanson Wins South Dakota 9B Championship

Hanson beat Hitchcock-Tulare 50-24 in a battle of unbeaten to claim South Dakota's 9B high school football championship Thursday afternoon. The winning Beavers (12-0) were led by senior running back Matt McManus, who rushed for 133 yards and three touchdown. McManus was named the game's Most Valuable Player.

South Dakota Championships Begin Today

South Dakota will crown three state champions on Thursday at the Dakota Dome. In the 9B championship game, unbeaten Hitchcock-Tulare faces top-ranked Hanson in a game that starts at 11 A.M. CST. Hitchcock will be playing its second game since Monday when it beat Harding County 46-6 in a postponed semifinal match-up. Click here for a game preview.

In the 9A championship game, two teams that are very familiar with championship games will square-off for state gold. Avon, which is the #2 seed and seeking its fourth title since 2002, will face #3 Gettysburg. Gettysburg has never won a state title, but has finished runner-up six times. South Dakota High School Football Scoreboard - Semifinals

All but one of the South Dakota high school football championship games are now set for next weekend at the Dakota Bowl. All of the semifinals, except for the 9B semifinal between Harding County and Hitchock-Tulare (played Monday) were decided on Saturday. The state's biggest class, 11AA, will feature the #3 and #4 seeds as Washington and Lincoln were able to pull-off surprises on Saturday. It will be the Lincoln Patriots first appearance in a state championship game.

South Dakota Kicks-Off 2008 Regular Season Friday

With seven titles in eight seasons, West Central opens the season as the #1 team in the MaxPreps South Dakota pre-season high school football rankings. The regular season opens Friday night for 11-man and 9-man teams throughout the state.

Rounding out the MaxPreps Pre-Season Top 5 are Harrisburg at #2, Dell Rapids is ranked third, defending 11AA champ Roosevelt begins the season ranked fourth and O'Gorman rounds at the Top 5.

Meanwhile, teams around the state used this weekend for their final scrimmages. 11 teams gathered at Minot State University for a little fine-tuning. On-hand for the varsity and JV scrimmages were Bishop Ryan, Minot High, Velva, Rugby, Des Lacs-Burlington, Garrison-Max, Hazen, Beulah, Bottineau, Harvey and Stanley.

West Central captured its seventh South Dakota high school football championship in eight years with a 51-13 win over St. Thomas More Thursday in the 11A title game. Mike Galliger rushed for over 100 yards and three scores for the Trojans, who have now won 11 overall since 1993.

West Central Goes After Another South Dakota High School Football Title

West Central finds itself in very familiar territory again. The Trojans, who last year saw their consecutive state title streak snapped at six straight, is back in the South Dakota Class 11A football championship game.

West Central (11-0) is playing another unbeaten in St. Thomas More (11-0), which has spent the last three state title games as the bridesmaid.

West Central is considered South Dakota's most storied franchise. Since 1993 the Trojans have won ten state titles while only losing seven games!
